My book is a sweeping saga of a small town of Shaftsburg in a once Mid Michigan wilderness located in Woodhull Township, in the Southwest corner of Shiawassee County's Woodhull Township.
This trek of emigration began in Europe that crosses the Atlantic and makes stops in County of Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Conastota, New York, before riding on a Prairie Schooner across Canada to Michigan.
Learn how these pioneers settled and raised crops for food, livestock, and cash requred to purchase farm implements, goods and services. Finally, see them in their dailiy lives as children atttended school, families attended church services and particpated in recreational activities. Annual reunions, picnics, and parades gave relief from the hard working farm life of early pioneer settlers.
Unique to this small town in America: Shaftsburg was once the Capital of Michigan for one day, and built the first one-half mile race track.
How Did Small Towns Evolve from the Wilderness to What They Are Today?
The primary aspiration for this book is to provide resources for all persons interested in understanding the scope and events that brought their small towns to evolve from pioneer settlements to the small towns they are today. Additionally, following the Shaft Clan emgration from Europe to Michigan the trek demonstrates how the more we know of our ancestral hetitage, the more we know about ourselves and who we are!

In 2023, the 108th Shaft Reunion is a First Time New Location
A first time Shaft Clan Reunion will be held on July 30, 2023, from 12 Noon to 4 PM. Featured is the Shaftsburg and Woodhull Township Window Display which highlights artifacts, documents, and photos at the Shiawassee County Historical Society Museum, 1997 North Michigan 52, Owosso, MI 48867.
Public is invited to the museum on Thursdays from 10 AM to 3 PM or the first Sunday of the month from 2 PM to 4 PM.
